Thomas Benton "Bennett" Payne had a very colorful Civil War experience with Company A of the 22nd North Carolina Infantry under Pettigrew, including advancing further than Pickett in their equally ill fated charge at Gettysburg.  He was captured just before the surrender at Appomattox and ended the war in prison at Hart's Island, New York.
